Yes, we need multiple COVID-19 vaccines for people to use around the world to bring the pandemic situation under control. This year, the FDA approved a handful of vaccines to protect against COVID-19, but we still need more vaccines.

Here are a few reasons we need multiple vaccines to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic:

Vaccines to work for a range of people

First of all, we need vaccines for a broad spectrum of people, including people with health conditions (like heart diseases, diabetes, blood pressure,) senior citizens, and pregnant women. We are not sure the approved medicines will be effective for people of all ages, different immunity systems, different ethnic backgrounds, and more. We’re also not sure for how long the people will be immuned with the approved vaccine shots.

As we have a lot of unanswered concerns, it’s better to have multiple vaccines

The production rate is lesser than the population

For meeting the aim of vaccinating high-risk populations worldwide by the end of 2021, we need at least 2 billion vaccine doses. As of now, the significant share of the initial production of vaccines is already spoken for. So, companies need to scale up their production as much as possible. Also, by investing and developing multiple vaccines, we stand a much better chance to meet the volume of doses we need to control the pandemic.

We need vaccines that can reach everyone

The EU alone has reserved over 2.3 billion doses for their citizens, while the UK has secured over 350 million vaccine doses for its population. As most of the vaccine stock is already spoken for, the government is trying to ensure that poor countries are not frozen out of vaccines with the help of COVAX efforts. According to this, all participating countries (regardless of income levels) will have equal access to these Covid-19 vaccines once they are developed.
